LinkedIn Workforce Report | United States | November 2025

Key Insights:

  • Hiring mostly unchanged in October: National hiring slowed 0.8% in October and is down 5.8% from October 2024. It has now slowed nearly 9% since the start of the year and is over 20% below pre‑pandemic levels (October 2019). Overall, LinkedIn data suggests a modest increase in payroll employment of +40K in October.

  • Hiring gains split across industries: From September to October, 10 of 20 industries saw the pace of hiring increase, led by Retail (+6.8%), Real Estate and Equipment Rental Services (+3.4%), and Accommodation and Food Services (+2.9%). Though it remains weak compared to last year, hiring performed the strongest compared to October 2024 in Accommodation and Food Services (+2.9%), Technology, Information and Media (–0.2%), and Construction (–0.4%). Government Administration continues to show the steepest decline, down 16.2% from last year.

  • Hiring gains spread across major metros: Hiring picked up 13 of 20 tracked metro areas from September to October, led by Boston (+4.1%), Cleveland (+3.0%), and Seattle (+2.6%). The strongest year-over-year performance remained concentrated in the Sunbelt: Miami-Fort Lauderdale (+6.1%), Minneapolis-St. Paul (+1.0%) and Phoenix (+0.7%).

Hiring in the U.S.

The LinkedIn hiring rate is a measure of hires divided by LinkedIn membership. Nationally, across all industries, hiring in the U.S. was 0.8% lower in October 2025 compared to last month September 2025. National hiring was 5.8% lower in October 2025 compared to last year October 2024.

The industries with the most notable hiring shifts month-to-month in October 2025 were Retail (6.8% higher); Real Estate and Equipment Rental Services (3.4% higher); and Accommodation and Food Services (2.9% higher).

Methodology: “Hiring Rate” is the count of hires (LinkedIn members in each industry who added a new employer to their profile in the same month the new job began), divided by the total number of LinkedIn members in the U.S. By only analyzing the timeliest data, we can make accurate month-to-month comparisons and account for any potential lags in members updating their profiles. This number is indexed to the average month in 2016 for each industry; for example, an index of 1.05 indicates a hiring rate that is 5% higher than the average month in 2016.
