LinkedIn Workforce Report | United States | September 2025

Key Insights:

  • National hiring was virtually unchanged from July to August, rising just 1%. Compared to one year prior and January 2025, hiring slowed by 4%. Although the pace of decline is less steep than in recent years, hiring remains sluggish—more than 20% below pre-pandemic levels (August 2019).

  • From July to August, 13 of 20 industries saw modest increases. However, hiring remains subdued compared to last year. The strongest year-over-year gains in August were in Accommodation and Food Services (+8.4%), Technology, Information, and Media (+2.9%), and Retail (+1.6%). Government Administration saw the steepest decline, with hiring down 14.0%, reflecting the significant slowdown in government payrolls reported throughout the summer.

  • Hiring increased in 15 of the 20 metro areas we track from July to August. The strongest month-over-month gains were in Nashville (+6.7%), Detroit (+6.5%), and Atlanta (+4.2%). In contrast, hiring slowed in Dallas–Fort Worth (–0.4%), Denver (–0.7%), and St. Louis (–1.6%). Year-over-year, hiring was strongest in Miami–Fort Lauderdale (+7.9%), Phoenix (+3.9%), and Cleveland (+2.0%).

Hiring

The LinkedIn hiring rate is a measure of hires divided by LinkedIn membership. Nationally, across all industries, hiring in the U.S. was 1% higher in August 2025 compared to last month July 2025. National hiring was 4.1% lower in August 2025 compared to last year August 2024.

The industries with the most notable hiring shifts month-to-month in August 2025 were Farming, Ranching, Forestry (6% higher); Holding Companies (5.2% higher); and Accommodation and Food Services (3.5% higher).

Methodology: “Hiring Rate” is the count of hires (LinkedIn members in each industry who added a new employer to their profile in the same month the new job began), divided by the total number of LinkedIn members in the U.S. By only analyzing the timeliest data, we can make accurate month-to-month comparisons and account for any potential lags in members updating their profiles. This number is indexed to the average month in 2016 for each industry; for example, an index of 1.05 indicates a hiring rate that is 5% higher than the average month in 2016.
